CRISTÓBAL LEÓN & JOAQUÍN COCIÑA

Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, both born in Chile in 1980, are a filmmaking and stop-motion animation duo who have been collaborating since 2007. They studied at the Universidad Católica de Chile, where they developed their passion for visual art. León also pursued further studies at UdK in Berlin and at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. Their work is distinguished by an experimental approach, incorporating a range of techniques such as photography, drawing, sculpture, and performance. They explore profound themes such as religion, sexuality, and death through a raw cinematic language, using papier-mâché figures and naïve drawings to address dark subject matter.

Their first feature film, “The Wolf House” (“La Casa Lobo”, 2018), was acclaimed at its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it received the Caligari Prize. The film was screened at more than 100 international festivals and received numerous awards. In 2021, their short film “The Bones” was also awarded at the Venice Film Festival. Their latest feature, “The Hyperboreans”, was presented at Cannes in 2024 in the Directors’ Fortnight. Their work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions such as MoMA in New York and Tate in London, consolidating their reputation on the global art scene. They currently live and work in Santiago, Chile.
